National assembly Committee Leaders Warned of Removal for Skipping House Sessions.
Speaking during a National Assembly leadership retreat held in Naivasha on Monday, the Speaker reiterated his commitment to enhancing legislative efficiency and minimizing delays. He stressed the vital role of committee leadership.He issued a strong warning to committee chairpersons and their deputies, cautioning that continued absenteeism from House sessions could lead to their removal from leadership positions
Wetang’ula reminded committee leaders that their roles come with privileges, including additional allowances and travel benefits. He urged them to honor these responsibilities by attending House sessions consistently and ensuring smooth parliamentary operations. The Speaker further warned that any bill, motion, or petition set for debate or response in the absence of the relevant chair, vice-chair, or member would be immediately shelved.
The directive aims to improve accountability and expedite the handling of House business. Wetang’ula also highlighted that public and parliamentary concerns often experience delays due to the absence of responsible members. Moving forward, he announced a stricter approach: any private member’s bill, motion, or petition will be discarded if the sponsoring member fails to attend without valid justification.
The Speaker urged members to prioritize their presence in the House and called on party whips to support efforts in ensuring full attendance when needed.
