National Assembly Rejects Mung Beans Bill 2022, Mediation Process Initiated
The National Assembly has rejected the Mung Beans Bill 2022 during its second reading, with legislators voting against the Bill due to several contentious provisions. A 30-day mediation process will be initiated to resolve these issues and determine the Bill’s fate. Initially introduced by Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua and officially published on December 30, 2022, the Mung Beans Bill aims to create a regulatory framework for the growth and development of Kenya's mung bean industry, focusing on both local and global markets.
The Bill also advocates for the inclusion of mung beans in government feeding programs and the adoption of modern farming techniques to enhance efficiency and boost productivity in the sector.
In accordance with Article 113 of the Constitution, a mediation committee, comprising equal members from the National Assembly and Senate, will be established to reach a consensus on the Bill. The committee has 30 days to produce a mediated version, which will be presented to both Houses for further consideration and approval.
