Samason Cherargei Wants Presidential Term limit Increased to 7years

A Bill seeking to have the presidential term limit and that of  all elected leaders extended from five to seven years has been published.

The bill dubbed ''The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2024'' is sponsored by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei,  is ready for introduction in the Senate for first reading.

Unlike the norm if senator Cherargei's bill is assented into law it will now mean that  Kenyans elect their leaders after every seven  years.

“The Bill proposes to amend Article 136 of the Constitution, which provides for election of the President, to increase the term of President from five years to seven years,” the Bill states.

Bill amends Articles 101, 177 and 180 of the Constitution to extend the terms of MPs, senators, MCAs and governors to seven years.

Currently, the Constitution limits the term of the President to a maximum of two terms of five years.

A similar attempt was proposed by Fafi Mp Salah Yakub in 2022, it however flopped and replaced with an age limit of 75 years.
