Senators have vehemently opposed the proposed acquisition of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by the Adani Group, calling it a potentially fraudulent venture due to the company's questionable reputation for graft. This resistance follows significant backlash from Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) employees and the public, who feel they are being stripped of a national asset through secretive government dealings with Adani.

The Senate has rejected the proposal and raised concerns about the deal’s legitimacy. On Thursday, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir appeared before the Senate Committee on Transport but was turned away for lacking proper documentation. He returned on Friday with details of the concession agreement and Adani's proposal. However, he clarified that the documents were merely proposals and not a finalized contract.

Senators are wary that the Adani Group’s privately initiated proposal to revamp and manage the airport for 30 years could be a vehicle for financial misconduct. They are also seeking protection for a whistleblower who raised concerns and questioning the lack of public transparency during the negotiations.
