Impeachment Motion Against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Sparks Division Among MPs
During a tense parliamentary session, Kibwezi West MP Mutuse Mwengi spearheaded an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, receiving strong backing from MPs. However, most legislators from Gachagua's home county of Murang’a stood by him, with 54 members opting not to sign the motion and instead choosing to remain neutral. The Deputy President secured less than 20% of the House's support, as the MPs exceeded the required 117-member threshold, with 174 members endorsing the historic motion.
Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich, opposing the move, questioned the impartiality of Speaker Wetangula and Deputy Speaker, suggesting their previous comments indicated bias that could undermine the hearing's fairness. Toroitich, representing President Ruto’s Elgeyo Marakwet stronghold, argued that the evidence against Gachagua was insufficient to justify his removal.
