Mass Exodus from Villages in Tana River Due to Escalating Inter-Community Conflicts
Several villages in Bangale and Tana North sub-counties of Tana River County now stand abandoned as residents flee from rising inter-community violence. Fear of attacks has forced locals to seek refuge in safer areas, leaving their homes behind. In the chaos, houses have been torched in what appear to be retaliatory attacks between feuding communities. Once-thriving villages are now eerily silent as residents relocate to avoid harm.
Tana River Governor Godhana Dhadho and Galole MP Said Hiribae were detained by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for questioning regarding their alleged involvement in the unrest. Additionally, several other leaders from the county have provided statements to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) for further investigation.
Religious leaders affiliated with the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) in Garissa and Tana River counties have strongly condemned the ongoing violence. Sheikh Hassan Abdi, speaking on behalf of the clerics, emphasized that the attacks are contrary to Islamic values. They have urged the government to engage with local leaders, elders, and residents to foster peace and prevent further destruction of lives and property.
