CS Wahome Calls for Accountability in Construction Sector to Combat Unsafe Buildings
What's Your Reaction?
During her speech at the Board of Registration for Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) seminar held at Safari Park Hotel on Thursday, September 5, CS Wahome stressed the critical need to enforce accountability among property owners, architects, and engineers, including through legal action. She underscored the necessity of penalizing those involved in shortcuts and corruption within the construction industry.
The initiative aims to address the problem of irregular constructions, which are often perpetuated by corrupt officials and professionals who fail to address unsafe building practices, despite approvals from regulatory bodies such as NEMA, the National Construction Authority, and other relevant state agencies.
It is deeply concerning that numerous buildings identified as unsafe and in dire need of demolition or reinforcement remain in use, jeopardizing the safety of thousands of Kenyans. Professionals who compromise public safety for financial gain cannot be tolerated. The National Construction Authority's reports highlight that many buildings are extremely hazardous, continuously posing risks to their occupants.
