Senate to Review Impeachment Charges Against Deputy President Gachagua

The approval of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment has now cleared the way for the motion to move to the Senate. The process, which officially began on September 1, 2024, was initiated by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, citing 11 grounds for impeachment that were presented to the National Assembly for review.

Tensions have run high in parliament, with critics accusing Gachagua of prioritizing his own community at the expense of his role as a national unifier. With over 233 MPs voting in favor—surpassing the required threshold—the odds were firmly stacked against Gachagua, who has repeatedly described the impeachment as a politically motivated attack orchestrated by his rivals in the government.

Following the vote, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula instructed the clerk to prepare the necessary documents and submit them to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi. Kingi is expected to call a Senate session within seven days to review the charges against the Deputy President. The Senate will then debate the motion and determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed with Gachagua's impeachment.
