Senate Speaker Halts All Travel for Impeachment Proceedings of Deputy President

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has ordered the immediate suspension of all Senate committee activities planned outside Nairobi or abroad until Saturday, October 19, 2024. The travel restriction aims to ensure full participation of all Senators in the upcoming impeachment hearings.

The Senate is expected to decide Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s fate within 10 days, following the communication received from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, which outlined the MPs' decision to impeach the Deputy President on Tuesday.Speaker Kingi has instructed the Clerk of the Senate to formally invite the Deputy President to defend himself against the 11 charges leading to his removal from office. The Senate will begin its deliberations in plenary on Wednesday, October 16, and Thursday, October 17.
