ODM Opposes Senate Bill Seeking to Extend Term Limits for Elected Officials
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has expressed strong opposition to a Senate Bill proposing the extension of term limits for elected officials. This bill, introduced by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, seeks to increase the tenure of the President, Governors, Senators, Members of Parliament (MPs), and County Assembly Representatives from five years to seven.
ODM’s Executive Director, Oduor Ong’wen, criticized the Senate’s approach, emphasizing that changes to term limits should only be implemented through a public referendum. The party argues that the proposed amendment undermines essential constitutional protections designed to ensure transparency and accountability.
The ODM leadership is urging Senators to reject the bill, highlighting the importance of adhering to principles such as good governance, the rule of law, and public participation. They also requested the opportunity to present additional oral submissions to strengthen their position on the matter.
