National Assembly formally Notifies Senate of DP Rigathi Gachagua’s Impeachment

After the successful passing of the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the National Assembly has formally notified the Senate of the decision. A total of 281 MPs voted in favor of the motion. The charges against the 59-year-old Deputy President include corruption, insubordination, undermining the government, and engaging in ethnically divisive politics, among other allegations.

National Assembly Clerk Samuel Njoroge has officially informed the Senate of the impeachment. Following this, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi is expected to present the charges to the Senators. They will then determine the next steps, which may involve forming an 11-member committee or convening a plenary (Committee of the Whole House) to investigate the charges and vote on the impeachment. The motion passed with 281 votes in favor, while 44 opposed it, making Rigathi Gachagua the first Deputy President in Kenya’s history to face impeachment.
