Republican Convention Kicks Off

The Republican National Convention is set to commence as scheduled on Monday in Milwaukee, marking the first major gathering of party members since former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. By its conclusion on Thursday, Trump is expected to secure the party's nomination, alongside an as-yet-unannounced running mate.

Trump, arriving in Milwaukee on Sunday, reaffirmed the convention's continuation despite recent events. "Based on yesterday’s tragic events, I initially considered delaying my trip and the convention itself by two days. However, I have decided that neither a 'shooter' nor any threat will dictate our schedule or agenda," Trump stated on Sunday. In a subsequent message, he emphasized, "UNITE AMERICA!"

In response to Trump's call, party members have rallied around him with renewed unity and support. Even former critics like former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, initially excluded from the RNC, are now scheduled to speak on Tuesday, underscoring the growing backing for Trump within the GOP.

Party leaders view the convention as a crucial opportunity to showcase unity, a stark contrast to the divisions among Democrats regarding Biden’s candidacy. The event is expected to draw approximately 50,000 attendees, according to the Milwaukee 2024 Host Committee, including 2,429 delegates from all states and territories. As of July 12, Trump has secured 2,268 delegates.

What to anticipate

Trump's speeches are anticipated to echo familiar themes, emphasizing his view that the country has weakened under the Biden administration's leadership. He is expected to criticize what he perceives as unjust legal scrutiny of himself and his supporters, while also addressing economic concerns such as "Bidenflation." Discussions on military strength and border security are also likely focal points.
