Deputy President Gachagua Files Court Petition to Halt Impeachment Proceedings

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has submitted a petition to the High Court, seeking to stop the impeachment proceedings against him in the National Assembly. His legal team accused Speaker Moses Wetangula and Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei of bias, claiming they publicly expressed opinions on the matter.

Gachagua's lawyers argued that the impeachment was politically driven and aimed at undermining the people's democratic choice. He further stated that the attempt to remove him from office was unconstitutional and lacked valid justification.

In his court submission, Gachagua sought an order preventing the National Assembly from advancing or passing any resolutions related to the motion filed on September 26. This is the fourth such petition, with three earlier ones being dismissed. Public hearings on the motion are set to start on Friday, October 4, 2024.
