Council of Governors Aims to Boost Female Leadership in Upcoming Elections

Women governors lead by the Council of Governors chairperson, Anne Waiguru, have emphasized the Council’s commitment to increasing the representation of women in gubernatorial positions. Currently, there are seven women governors, but the Council aims to raise this number to a bigger number by 2027.

Addressing the challenges faced by women in leadership, Waiguru referenced Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment attempts three times, encouraging potential female candidates not to be deterred. "Our mission is to support fellow leaders and inspire ourselves, acknowledging the unique challenges women governors face," she stated during a Council of Governors Women group (G7) press briefing .

All current female governors in the country i.e Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Fatuma Achani (Kwale), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), and Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) attended the event. After the briefing, they embarked on a two-day tour of Machakos County, led by Ndeti.

The group expressed solidarity with Mwangaza, who was absent during the breifing due to her pending impeachment trial before the Senate. Waiguru voiced hope and support for  her sister governor Mwangaza's and encouraged other women to pursue gubernatorial positions despite the hurdles.

Increasing the number of women governors in 2027  will promote a stronger female presence in governance . Governor wainguru also encourage male governors seeking re-election to consider female running mates. The women governors said their tour throught their countie is an opportunity to highlight our achievements in healthcare, youth empowerment, talent development, and other vital areas.These initiative signifies a proactive step forward for women in leadership quest.
