University Strike that involved involved university lecturers, non-teaching staff was Resolved After Successful Negotiations
A strike that, involved university lecturers, non-teaching staff, and various workers' unions, was successfully resolved following negotiations overseen by Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua. The talks were facilitated by an inter-ministerial committee, which included representatives from the Ministries of Education, Treasury, Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), and Labour.
The signed return-to-work agreement outlined that the strike would end immediately without any repercussions for union members. Universities committed to adhering to the agreed payment schedules. Additionally, the CS assured that his ministry would establish systems to address future disputes before they escalate to industrial actions.
The inter-ministerial committee is set to meet for a month starting October 1, 2024, to tackle outstanding issues such as the harmonisation of allowances, medical coverage, internal Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), increasing staff at public universities, and reviewing budgets for promotions, car loans, and mortgage programs.
