UDA Party Rejects Proposal to Extend Presidential Term Limit

A proposed bill by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, seeking to extend the presidential term limit from five to seven years, has sparked significant criticism, even within his own UDA party. UDA Party Secretary General Hassan Omar strongly opposed the proposal, labeling it as a regressive step that disregards the historical and institutional necessity of maintaining term limits.

In a statement shared by President Ruto on his X account, UDA denounced the sponsors of the bill, accusing them of engaging in "political delinquency" and failing to recognize the importance of term limits in Kenya’s political history. Omar reaffirmed the party’s commitment to upholding Kenya's legacy of constitutional reforms, which culminated in the adoption of the progressive and inclusive 2010 Constitution. The UDA party has called upon its members who support the bill to reconsider and withdraw their backing immediately.

The party also acknowledged the importance of the 2010 Constitution in helping Kenyans achieve significant milestones in governance. Many Kenyans share the party’s stance and have expressed strong disapproval of the senator’s proposal.
