Senator Chimera Seeks To Have The State Legalize Traditional Brew

Nominated senator Raphael Chimera might earn a special  place in traditional brew lovers followiing his latest move.

Chimera seeks to amend the alcoholic drinks control law, arguing that local brews have no effect and are largely drinks made to mark certain celebrations in most rural areas.

The Senator argues that the provision in law demanding one to get a licence to sell local Kenyan brews should be withdrawn and thus those involved be let run their businesses unperturbed.

In his submissions he further argued that neighbouring countries have embraced their local drinks such as waragi in Uganda and konyagi in Tanzania while Kenya continues to stifle the industry be introducing numerous hurdles.

To solve adverse effect of local brews senator Chimera proposes the doing away with the 250ml bottle of any liquor and thus substituting it with the lowest being 750 ml bottle.

"The main reason we are limiting packaging to 750 ml is to dissuade many Kenyans from having access quotas and alcohol packaged in sachets and in smaller quantities so that it is not readily affordable so that a Kenyan who wants to enjoy alcohol will have access very safe and quality liquor.

"That is the idea around keeping it 750ml so that we are able to eradicate what we call Kayole industries that are known to imitate and produce many bottles of quotas and the likes into the market,"

The MP says this would make sure drinks are out of reach for many and restrict drinking to socializing and not one drinking to either forget their problems, or as an antidepressant.
