The clergy speaks on Cherargei's Proposal to Extend Presidential Term that has Sparks Public Uproar

The Nandi Senator, Samson Cherargei, has introduced a bill proposing the extension of presidential and other elected leaders' terms to seven years. According to Cherargei, this change would offer more time for the president and elected officials to effectively implement development projects. He argues that a seven-year term would provide ample opportunity to deliver on campaign promises, noting that the early years of a presidency are often consumed by election disputes and legal challenges.

However, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa has voiced opposition to this idea, suggesting instead that term limits should be reduced for elected positions.

Religious leaders, led by Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, have warned against any attempt to amend the presidential term limits. They insist that such constitutional changes should require a referendum, urging Kenyans to actively participate in the decision-making process. The public has until Friday to submit their opinions on the proposal, which has sparked widespread criticism and debate.

The bill has also met resistance from political leaders. Kimani Ichung'wa, the Majority Leader in the National Assembly, dismissed the proposal, declaring it "dead on arrival."
