A virtual training session intended for public health officials nationwide was abruptly canceled following unforeseen disruptions.

The launch of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) encountered another obstacle when virtual training sessions intended to instruct public health officials on the registration and usage of the new health scheme were unexpectedly canceled. The session, scheduled to be hosted by Health PS Harry Kimtai at JW Marriott in Nairobi's Chiromo area, was set to begin at 7:30 am. However, public participants infiltrated the meeting to express opposition to SHIF.

Displeased Kenyans made their objections to the health scheme known, adding to the growing resistance from multiple sectors. Additionally, the government is under scrutiny for the IT system supporting SHIF, which taxpayers will fund for a decade. The lack of competitive bidding in selecting the supplier has raised suspicions of possible corruption. The current National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) will cease operations on Monday, and the SHA is set to take over from October 1, 2024.

Concerns remain high about the implementation of the SHA, particularly regarding the limited benefits offered compared to member contributions. Participants are expected to contribute 2.75% of their gross salary, a point of dissatisfaction among many Kenyans.
