KUPPET Calls Off Strike After Agreement with TSC

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has officially ended their strike after reaching an agreement with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The strike, which began on August 16, 2024, had reached its second week, leading to some schools sending students home. On Monday evening, KUPPET and TSC reached a resolution, with TSC assuring that no teacher would face disciplinary action for participating in the strike.

KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori announced the suspension of the strike and encouraged teachers to return to their classrooms while the unresolved issues continue to be addressed during the suspension.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia confirmed that both parties agreed to pursue alternative dispute resolution as outlined in their recognition agreement.

The teachers had gone on strike to demand various issues, including the promotion of 130,000 teachers, the absorption of 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, and the remittance of statutory deductions and loans. They also called for the full implementation of the 2021-25 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), payment of all July emoluments, and the release of KSh 15 billion for their medical cover.
