Government Launches Campaign for SHIF Registration Before September 30 Deadline
On September 16, 2024, at the Kenya School of Government, Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa launched the master trainer program for the Health Provider Portal. This initiative aims to equip master trainers with the skills needed to implement the SHA Health Provider Portal in health facilities. Alongside this, training on health management information systems and community health promoters will be conducted simultaneously to facilitate assisted registration.
Dr. Barasa highlighted that the government is conducting a nationwide campaign to encourage all Kenyans to enroll in the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) before the September 30, 2024, deadline. Starting from October 1, 2024, SHIF will replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which has been in place since 1966. Employers will be required to use the SHA Employer Portal (https://sha.go.ke/) to manage their employees' SHIF contributions. This portal will enable four key functions: registering employees and their dependents, managing contributions, generating reports, and updating employee information.
As of September 16, 2024, Dr. Barasa announced that over 1.2 million people have already signed up for SHIF. She also confirmed that existing NHIF members will be automatically transferred to the new SHIF system.
