Japhet Koome Resigns as Kenya's Police Chief; Douglas Kanja Appointed Acting IG

Japhet Koome has resigned as Inspector General of Kenya's National Police Service, with his resignation accepted by President William Samoei Ruto. In the interim, Douglas Kanja, the current Deputy-Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, has been appointed as acting Inspector-General.

Japhet Koome has stepped down from his position as Inspector General of the National Police Service. This announcement was made by Hussein Mohamed, the State House Spokesperson, who stated, "His Excellency William Samoei Ruto, Ph.D, CGH, President and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, has accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, effective July 12, 2024."

In the interim, pending nomination, parliamentary approval, and appointment of a new police IG, the President has appointed Mr. Douglas Kanja, the current Deputy-Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, to serve as the acting Inspector-General of the National Police Service. Additionally, Mr. Eliud Langat will take on the role of Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, while Mr. James Kamau will serve as Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service.
