Ruto Declares a National Dialogue from 15th July

President William Ruto announced plans for a six-day multi-sectoral dialogue forum commencing on July 15, aimed at addressing pressing national issues. Speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Ruto emphasized that the forum would gather representatives from political parties, religious groups, civil society, employers, and youth. He underscored that all participants would bear their own attendance costs, a decision reached after morning consultations.

Stakeholders are required to nominate their representatives by Friday this week, Ruto confirmed, highlighting that the forum aims to chart a way forward for the country. The announcement followed Ruto's signing of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which was proposed by the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) following controversies stemming from the 2022 presidential election results.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition lawmakers, expressed support for Ruto's initiative, calling it the best approach to address the current national crisis. "We will provide a platform for people to voice their concerns," Odinga affirmed, noting the forum's potential to offer lasting solutions to issues such as unemployment, corruption, ethnicity, debt, and economic management.

The forum's announcement coincides with nationwide protests against taxation policies and President Ruto's administration. Originating from opposition to the Finance Bill, 2024, which aimed to raise Ksh.346 billion in revenue through increased taxes, the protests persisted even after Ruto's decision to withhold assent on June 26 due to public pressure. According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, the protests resulted in over 39 fatalities.

In summary, President Ruto's dialogue forum initiative seeks to foster inclusive discussions among diverse stakeholders to address critical national concerns amid ongoing socio-political challenges and public unrest.
