Court Temporarily Halts National Teachers Strike Amid Financial Relief

The Employment and Labour Relations Court on Today 27/8/2024 ,has issued a temporary halt to the ongoing nationwide teachers' strike, following a petition by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The court has scheduled a mention of the case for September 5, offering a glimmer of hope for students whose education has been severely disrupted, especially with national exams just around the corner.

On the same day, the Treasury released Ksh 13.5 billion earmarked for teachers' salaries. This financial relief comes as the strike, organized by the Kenya National Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET), continues to paralyze the education sector.

Teachers initiated the strike in response to the government's failure to implement the agreed-upon Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and address other unresolved issues, raising concerns about the impact on the education system.Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos had previously expressed optimism that a resolution would be achieved following extensive consultations with stakeholders.
