The French film industry's golden age featured the actor, who gained fame for his rugged on-screen image in popular films such as Borsalino and The Samurai is dead.

According to a statement provided to the AFP news agency, "He passed away peacefully in his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and his family."

Alain Delon has been a virtual recluse due to his poor health in recent years. His family's disintegration has been in the news in France more recently.

Known as "the most beautiful man in movies," Delon starred in popular 1960s films such as Rocco and The Leopard.

Whether he was portraying a murderer or a charming con artist, he always won over the hearts of his audience.

His movie roles became fewer starting in the 1990s, although he continued to be mentioned frequently in the tabloids.

Among those praising Delon on Sunday was French President Emmanuel Macron, who stated that the actor "played legendary roles and made the world dream."

He went on to say, "Melancholy, popular, secretive, he was more than a star: he was a French monument," in a statement posted on X, the previous Twitter platform.

"Alain Fabien, Anouchka, Anthony, and (his dog) Loubo are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father," his family stated in a statement.
